CCNSG Safety passport. The tutors perspective.

A Day in the Life of a CCNSG Safety Passport Tutor (a.k.a. Professional Cat-Herder in PPE)
People often ask me what it’s like being a CCNSG Safety Passport tutor. I usually smile, take a deep breath, and say something diplomatic like, “Rewarding!
”What I really mean is: it’s a wonderful mix of teaching, storytelling, diplomacy, crowd control, and occasionally feeling like a stand‑up comedian whose audience didn’t know they’d bought tickets!
Every CCNSG Course Starts the Same Way
I stand at the front of the room, looking at a group of delegates who range from:
the eager apprentice clutching their pen like it’s an exam from Hogwarts,
the veteran trades person who has definitely seen it all,
the person who thought this course was after lunch and is still half asleep,
and the one who’s already asked what time we'll finish
And that’s before I’ve even introduced myself!
Turning Safety Into Something People Actually Want to Listen To
The fun part is taking regulations, procedures, and hazard controls—things many people instinctively tune out—and turning them into something that lands.
Sometimes that means real life stories. Sometimes it means props. Sometimes it means saying, “Trust me, you do not want to be the case study we talk about next year.”
When the penny drops and someone says, “Ohhh, now that makes sense,” it’s pure gold. Those little moments make it all worthwhile.
The Human Element (a.k.a. What Keeps Things Interesting)
The best part of the job is the people.
One minute I’m hearing a story about a near miss involving a ladder, a squirrel and a misunderstanding. The next, I’m listening to someone describe how a simple safety decision prevented a serious incident.
Some delegates are nervous about tests, some are natural classroom talkers, and some don’t say a word until the final five minutes—then suddenly reveal they’ve had more experience than the rest of us combined.
My job is to make everyone feel comfortable, engaged, and able to walk away with skills they’ll actually use—not just forget as soon as they leave the building.
The Quiet Rewards
Every now and then, someone will come back and say: “You know that thing you talked about? It helped me spot something at work.”
That’s the moment you realise this role isn’t just about delivering a course. It's about changing habits, encouraging better decisions, and helping people finish their shifts safely—and that’s incredible.
Why I Love It (Despite the amount of coffee I consume)
Being a CCNSG Safety Passport tutor means you:
meet brilliant, hardworking, funny people,
help shape safer work environments,
learn something new every single day,
and occasionally have to be IT support when the technology refuses to cooperate.
It’s a role full of purpose, humour, and human connection. And honestly, I wouldn’t trade it for anything!
Cheers,
Dianne
